Lossiemouth is favourite for the Champion Hurdle next March

Anticipation is building ahead of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival in March, when the feature race on the opening day is the Grade 1 Champion Hurdle.

In a race that is always a thrilling spectacle, the leading candidates are now clearly emerging, with the Willie Mullins-trained Lossiemouth the 7/4 favourite.

She was successful in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse a couple of weeks ago, recording her sixth consecutive victory. Only one of the grey mare’s 10 outings since April 2022 has not ended with her in the winner’s enclosure – when she was second at Leopardstown in February last year.

Another Mullins representative, State Man, winner of last year’s Champion Hurdle, is the 7/2 second favourite. His last outing was on November 23 at Punchestown, where he came a close second.

By contrast, Nicky Henderson’s gelding Constitution Hill, 4/11 favourite and winner in 2023, and 4/1 for next March, has not raced since triumphing in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton last Boxing Day.

Others to look out for include Anzadam (20/1), again a Mullins charge, who won at Fairyhouse last week in an impressive first outing for more than 12 months.
