Villa can shade close contest 

Villa have impressed on their return to Europe’s top-flight competition and they head to Leipzig with 10 points on the board from a possible 15.

Victories over Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna, plus a draw with Juventus, have left Unai Emery’s side ninth in the 36-team table, meaning a place in the top eight and an automatic last-16 spot is within reach. 

After an eight-game winless run, Villa have enjoyed a timely return to form with recent Premier League wins over Brentford and Southampton and they can edge the verdict here.

A win over Leipzig, who have lost all five of their matches in the competition, would keep them right in contention before their final two games in the league phase against Monaco and Celtic.

The Bundesliga side have had one of the toughest draws in the Champions League and even though they have all lost their ties, they have gone down by only a single goal to Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus and Inter Milan, while they were also on the end of a 3-1 defeat to Celtic.

Duran the man for Emery

Jhon Duran’s season has already had some high points, with the Colombia striker memorably netting the winner against Bayern Munich in this competition.

Dhuran has scored nine goals this season, including the first-half strike on Saturday that was enough to see off Southampton.

Five of those goals have come when Duran has been introduced off the bench, so even if he’s not named in Emery’s starting line-up on Tuesday, he’s worth backing to score at any time against Leipzig.

Tielemans and Watkins can test home side

Leipzig have scored in eight of their previous 10 matches in all competitions, Villa in three of their last five games, so backing both teams to score is the first leg of our 9/1 bet builder.

Two of Villa’s players are interesting propositions in the shots market: Youri Tielemans appeals to have at least one shot on the night and we’re backing Ollie Watkins to have at least three on target.

Midfielder Tielemans has had at least one shot in four of Villa’s five European games, while key striker Watkins has had more than one shot on target in six games this season, including three in the recent 3-1 win over Brentford in the Premier League.
