Reds to show quality of Merseyside

The visitors’ boss Arne Slot will be demanding that his defence return to their resilient ways after a midweek hiccup at Newcastle United.

Liverpool’s matches with the Magpies often throw up plenty of goals and the 3-3 draw at St James’ Park on Wednesday night was no different.

Normally reliable goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a mistake late in the proceedings, and the hosts took full advantage. The hosts’ centre back Fabian Schar judged a 90th-minute cross from a deep free kick better than the Reds’ Republic of Ireland international and slid in to equalise for the Magpies from a narrow angle.

By contrast, Saturday’s Merseyside derby ought to reinstate business as usual for league leaders Liverpool against an Everton side who go into the game in 15th place and have struggled in front of goal in recent weeks.

The Toffees failed to net in four consecutive top-flight matches before beating Wolves 4-0 in their previous game on Wednesday night – but even then, the West Midlanders’ centre back Craig Dawson had the misfortune to rack up a brace of own goals.

Against a Reds side who have conceded just 11 goals in 14 league games this season, it is hard to see the hosts finding the firepower to score, and an away victory with a clean sheet looks a likely outcome.

Salah to strike again

Egypt superstar Mohamed Salah scored in the dramatic draw at Newcastle, bringing his top-flight tally this term to 13 goals in 14 fixtures.

He has certainly given the Anfield hierarchy plenty to think about regarding the renewal of his contract, and seems good value to get the opening goal on Saturday at Goodison Park.

With seven goals in 11 previous Premier League games against the Toffees, and given his current scoring record this term, the 32-year-old is good value to bag the opener at Goodison.

DCL and Keane feature in bet builder

For our combination punt, the hosts’ teammates Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane both feature.

The former looked far more of a threat against Wolves. He is currently joint 11th in the Premier League for shots on target this term, with 14 efforts, and the England man can test the Reds keeper on Saturday.

No player has picked up more yellow cards than Keane for Everton in the top flight this season. The centre back already has four bookings.

With so many attacking Liverpool stars to deal with, the 31-year-old defender could well pick up a fifth caution and thus an automatic one-game suspension.

To cap off this selection, under 2.5 total goals would have landed in all of the past five Merseyside derbies and we expect that trend to continue on Saturday.
